To reduce workmen’s heat load and ensure normal body functions under a hot environment it is required to reduce / eliminate of radiant heat and convective heat in the work environment and heavy manual work.
Everyone should pay attention to the safety measures and special arrangements for working in hot weather, which include but not limited to:
Provision of shelters:
Ø Provide shelters such as Rest sheds, umbrellas or sun shades at workplace, to prevent direct exposure to sunlight or major heat radiation source. (Moveable shelters can be considered for our project sites)
Ø By providing the shelters we can prevent workmen’s from taking rest under or beside of vehicles (taking rest under / beside the vehicles is the major cause for run overs!!).
Ø The shelters should have sufficient seats / blankets and provision of potable water. In addition, the shelters should be maintained and repaired properly.
Ø Isolate heat sources from rest shelters, workmen camps such as heat-generating machinery. In case workers cannot be kept away from heat sources, insulating materials / thick barrier should be used to minimize heat radiation.
Provision of Potable Water:
Ø Provide sufficient cool potable water at the workplace.
Ø Potable water should be available within 50-metre walking distance in the work area.
Ø Potable water storage tank should be cleaned properly in regular intervals and record should be maintained.
Ø Encourage workers to take plenty of water to replenish the body fluid and electrolytes lost through sweating. In general, a person will need to drink at least half a litre of water each hour while working under hot weather.
Ø Reschedule works to cooler (moderate weather) periods in daytime, to avoid working in hot environment for prolonged periods of time in so far as possible.Avoid assigning workers who may have difficulties in coping with heat to work under hot environment. Consider the advice of their attending doctors if necessary.
Ø During the afternoon work session, an additional rest period should be allowed for workmen’s during hot summer months (from May to September). Since the nature and scale of each individual site differs, together with the difference in project type and work procedures, each site can determine its own rest periods arrangement where appropriate.
Ø Allow workers to take regular breaks or rotate to other duties work in different locations to cool down and to reduce their exposure to the hot environment.
Ø Wear light-coloured clothes it will minimise heat absorption and enhance heat dissipation.
Ø Loose-fitting clothing to enhance perspiration (Avoid using loose fitting clothes, who are all working on / near to rotating parts of machinery’s may be entangled in the moving parts of machines)
Ø Wear long sleeved to avoid the skin from the direct exposure to sunlight.
Relevant Training :-
The training course should include the following elements:
Ø The potential Hazards related to hot environment.
Ø Risks involved in heat stress* and their respective safety measure.
Ø To recognize signs and symptoms of heat stress.
Ø First aid and emergency procedures for heat stress.
Ø Train workmen’s are to inform their supervisors immediately upon sensing or observing any symptoms of heat stress.
